Chapter 12 SBS616 Module
SBS616 Module
In 1996, Science Applications International Corporation delivered and installed a five-axis
ELECTRO-LOAD system for NAVAIR 4.3.2.4. Bihrle Applied Research was tasked to develop
an interface for the BAR D-Six simulation environment to serve as a flight simulation host for the
NAVAIR system. Under this tasking, Bihrle Applied Research developed an exertion to an
existing D-SIX Hardware interface module, D-SIX IOD. This document provides details
pertaining to the development and implementation of this extension.
NAVAIR ELECTRO-LOAD System and Set Up
The ELECTRO-LOAD system delivered to NAVAIR 4.3.2.4 is a five-axis control loading system
and was installed in an existing simulated cockpit provided by the US Navy. The control loading
system consists of mechanical linkages to the stick, rudder pedals, and throttle; force, position,
and acceleration sensors; torque motors; a VME computer chassis with a Pentium Processor
running MS DOS v6.22; data acquisition cards; shared memory; and control loading software,
CLOAD.
The CLOAD software is run on the ELECTRO-LOAD Pentium communicates with data
acquisition hardware and shared memory. See Figure 1. Data acquisition hardware on the VME
chassis include individual data acquisition cards for each loaded axis where all measurement
data and loading commands are transmitted to and from CLOAD. The shared memory provided
by an SBS Model 616 card is used by CLOAD to communicate with a HOST computer. The
